Desert safari experiences at Sam Sand Dunes
Six ways to spend time on the dunes, each explained plainly so you can choose what suits your group.
Safaris and special experiences are included only where your package lists them. Any of them can be added to a stay on request. Not sure which ride to choose? Read camel safari vs jeep safari.

On the sand
Camel Safari
A camel safari is the traditional way to see the dunes. Handlers lead the camels at walking pace along the ridges, so there is time to take photographs and watch the light change across the sand.
Rides are usually timed for late afternoon, finishing at a viewpoint for sunset. Length can be adjusted for children or first-time riders.
Suitable for
Most ages. Not advised for guests with back problems or during pregnancy.
Practical tips
- Wear closed shoes and loose trousers.
- Hold on when the camel stands up and sits down; it tips forward and back.
- Keep phones on a strap or in a zipped pocket.

Dune bashing
Jeep Safari
A jeep safari covers more ground than a camel ride. Drivers take the jeep up steep dune faces and down the other side, which is thrilling for some guests and too much for others.
Ask the driver to go gently if you prefer a scenic drive. Jeep rides are often combined with the sunset viewpoint.
Suitable for
Older children and adults. Not advised for guests with neck or back conditions, heart conditions or during pregnancy.
Practical tips
- Sit facing forward and hold the grab rail.
- Carry sunglasses or a scarf for blowing sand.
- Tell the driver if you want to slow down.

Golden hour
Sunset on the Dunes
The hour before sunset is the reason many people come to Sam. The low sun brings out the ripples in the sand, and the temperature drops quickly once it is gone.
Sunset can be enjoyed on its own or at the end of a camel or jeep ride. The viewpoints can be busy in peak season, so we suggest arriving a little early.
Suitable for
Everyone, including older guests who prefer not to ride.
Practical tips
- Carry a light layer; evenings cool down fast in winter.
- Photograph towards the sun and away from it; both work.
- Leave no litter on the dunes.

Music & dance
Cultural Evening
After dinner, local performers play traditional music of the Thar, and dancers perform folk dances in the open area of the camp. Guests are often invited to join in at the end.
The programme is informal and changes with the performers. It is usually part of an overnight stay; please check your package inclusions.
Suitable for
Everyone. Seating is outdoors.
Practical tips
- Bring a shawl for winter evenings.
- Ask before photographing performers up close.
- Tipping performers is appreciated but never expected.

Night sky
Stargazing
Once the camp lights are low, the sky over Sam can be very clear, especially on moonless nights between October and March. A short walk away from the tents makes a noticeable difference.
Visibility depends on the moon, dust and cloud, so it is never guaranteed. We are happy to suggest the best time on the night of your stay.
Suitable for
Everyone. Quiet and unhurried.
Practical tips
- Check the moon phase when choosing dates.
- Give your eyes 15 minutes to adjust to the dark.
- Use a red torch or dim phone screen.

For two
Private Dinner on the Dunes
For anniversaries, proposals or simply a quieter evening, we can set a private table on the sand with lanterns and candles, and serve dinner there instead of in the dining area.
This is arranged on request and is not part of standard stays. Share your date and any food preferences when you enquire.
Suitable for
Couples and small families. Arranged on request, subject to weather.
Practical tips
- Book in advance; setup takes time.
- Mention any celebration so we can plan the details.
- Carry a warm layer for winter nights.
