Winter, summer and monsoon each change the desert. A month-by-month look at when Sam Sand Dunes is most comfortable, and what to pack.

The short answer

For most travellers, the best time to visit Sam Sand Dunes is from October to March. Days are warm rather than hot, evenings are pleasant around a campfire, and the clear winter sky is good for stargazing. This is also the busiest period, so desert camps in Jaisalmer fill quickly around weekends, Diwali, Christmas and New Year.

That does not make the rest of the year a write-off. Each season has its own character, and some travellers prefer the quieter months.

October and November: the season opens

The heat of summer eases in October, though afternoons can still be warm. By November, days are comfortable and nights are cool enough for a light jacket. This is a good time for camel safaris in the late afternoon and for families who want mild weather without the deeper cold of mid-winter.

December to February: cool days, cold nights

Mid-winter brings bright, pleasant days and genuinely cold nights in the desert. Temperatures can drop sharply after sunset, so warm layers, socks and a cap are worth packing. In return you get the clearest skies of the year and the campfire becomes the centre of the evening.

The Desert Festival in Jaisalmer usually takes place in this window. Dates change each year, so check the official schedule before planning around it.

March: warmer, quieter

March is warmer and less crowded than peak winter. Mornings and evenings remain pleasant, and it can be easier to find availability at short notice. Plan safaris for late afternoon to avoid the midday sun.

April to June: the hot months

Summer in the Thar is intense. Daytime heat makes outdoor activity uncomfortable, and most activity shifts to early morning and evening. If you visit in these months, keep your plans short, drink plenty of water and ask your camp which facilities are available for cooling.

July to September: monsoon

Rain in this part of Rajasthan is limited but can arrive in short bursts. Humidity rises, and the landscape around the dunes sometimes turns briefly green. Some camps operate on a reduced schedule, so confirm opening before you travel.

What to pack in any season

Comfortable closed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf for wind-blown sand are useful all year. In winter add warm layers for the night. A small torch helps when walking between tents after dark.
